  • No fuzzy or textured paper or the barcodes will bleed.
  • Do not put tape on the barcode because the scanners will not read correctly.

Merchandise Preparation

Please read the following to learn how to successfully prepare your items for sale. You will need some or all of the following items to properly prepare your merchandise for sale:

Sale item example

Example of proper clothing preparation: Hanger facing left, printed tag in top right corner, accessories in bag pinned to clothing.

  • Hangers
  • 60#, 67# or 110# white card stock
  • Large safety pins
  • Clear packing tape
  • Plastic baggies

Clothes: We request that all clothes be secured on hangers. We recommend wire hangers because they take up less room on the racks and they are also better for securing your clothing with a safety pin when you attach your price tag. If you do not have wire hangers available, plastic hangers will do with preference given to child size hangers. With that said, we will accept all types of hangers. All clothes should be prepared on a hanger with the hanger facing left (like a question mark.) For multiple pieces of clothing items, please attach the main item to the hanger with the hook of the hanger facing left and the accessories/pieces pinned to the first item. For example: pin the shirt on the hanger, secure it with pins and then pin the pants to the back of the shirt. We recommend using large safety pins because they are stronger and easier to use on bulky items. WE RECOMMEND USING LARGE SAFETY PINS TO PIN THE TAG TO THE CLOTHING ITEM.

Remember, the more secure your item and tag are to the item/hanger, the better chance the tag and item will stay together and you will get the credit you deserve for your sold item.

Other merchandise preparation tips:

  • Taking a little extra time in your preparation can make a huge difference in the appearance of your items.
  • Iron/starch your clothing that is wrinkled
  • Clip loose threads, replace missing buttons, check zippers
  • Use a magic eraser on toys that are marked. For example, an outside toy that is wiped down using a magic eraser may look like new again.
  • Mommy Swap Meet will be conducting inspections of your items. Unaccepted items will be returned to you. Remember - we inspect the items carefully so that we can bring Hawaii the best in gently-used children's and maternity clothing, toys, furniture and gear.
  • If using plastic baggies to sell a bundled items, use zip lock bags or clear plastic tape to keep them shut and prevent items from getting lost.
  • All tags should be placed on the top right hand side of the garment(s)
  • For smaller children's clothes, keep in mind that multiple items on a hanger may sell better than just one pair of pants or one shirt. If you have three shirts that don't have pants put those together to build up the value of your items.
  • Sometimes tags do get lost so we suggest you put a small piece of tape with your consignor number on the tag inside the clothing or on the bottom of the toy. This way when we find a tag laying on the floor and an item that doesn't have a tag we will have a better chance of matching them back up..
  • Shoes: When tagging shoes, the tag should be safely pinned to the laces or the buckle of the shoes or place them in a baggie with that tag taped to the outside of the bag. Please don't tape over the bar code. Please wipe off, polish or wash all shoes prior to the sale. Again remember to price with a minimum of $1.00.
  • Toys: All toys must be in working order and clean enough to let your own child play with it. Please double check the toy manufacturer's web site for current recall info. Here are two links to the US Product Safety Commission site that provides recall info: 1) Infant/Child non toy product recalls 2) Toy Hazard Recalls If your toy has more than one piece, put the printed tag on the larger item and handwrite a tag with your consignor #, and item # and place on all other pieces. If you have lots of small pieces put them in a bag together with a handwritten tag on the bag. Please make sure all toy items are included and have batteries so they show that they work.
  • Furniture and equipment: We will be accepting cribs, mattresses, highchairs and other nursery furniture. Please double check the manufacturer's web site for current recall info. If your item has more than one piece, put the printed tag on the larger item and handwrite a tag with your consignor #, and item # and place on all other pieces. Furniture sells better when it is completely assembled. We do not require things to be assembled but we highly recommend it.
  • Car seats: We will be accepting all brands of car seats. Please make sure that your car seat hasn't been recalled. In order to resell a car seat you will need to sign a waiver that the car seat was never in an accident or isn't currently being recalled. We will not sell a car seat we would not put our own child in. Safety comes first!
  • Books/DVDs/CDs: You can sell them individually or bundled together in zip lock baggies.
  • Blankets/Bedding: These items will be displayed on tables so please fold items nicely and secure with tag. Please bundle sets appropriately.

Pricing

At Hana Hou, you set the price! Price to sell keeping in mind the quality, name brand and condition of your items. Hana Hou suggests starting at 1/3 of the original price. Mark the starting price up if it is something that you are sentimental about, but of course, it is your decision if it is half price or not. Pricing of items is in $1.00 or .50 cent increments. Remember, outfits sell better than single items so if you have a whole outfit you can pin the coordinating hat, socks, etc to the main garment. Everyone loves those cute coordinated sets! Brand name items will sell for more. If you have any questions regarding pricing your items, please contact Judy Hull, our resident expert on pricing kid’s stuff. (poni@hanahouconsignment.com)

We are requesting that you select 30% of the items you are submitting to be included in the 1/2 Price Sale. You will be able to mark that you want to participate in the 1/2 price sale when entering your items in the tagging process online. The 1/2 price sale will take place on the last day of the sale. See more in our "Donations" section.

$1.00 Rule - If your single, hanging clothing item cannot bring $1.00 on it's own, please pair it with something that will bring it to this amount. This only applies to clothing, not toys/equipment.

Remember, a little extra effort getting your items ready will mean more money for you. Items that are cleaned, ironed and starched, with all pieces attached and loose threads clipped always sell much better!

Quality Control

Please understand we want Hana Hou to maintain a good reputation for high quality items so please double check your items for stains, rips or excess wear. We will be checking all items for quality at drop off, so please only bring items you would consider purchasing yourself. THIS IS NOT A YARD SALE. Please do not be offended if we do not accept some of your items. The process enables us to offer the highest quality items to our customers. Any items that fall short of these requirements will be returned to you or donated if marked "donate" on the tag.
