Organic Gardening is a Way of Life
January 31st, 2012There are many ways a person might go about gardening. You could stop by your local nursery and purchase transplants or start with seeds. You can hop on a tractor and till up an area the size of a football field, or grab a shovel and start small. Either way organic gardening is the only way for me. The work involved is much greater, but the rewards are so sweet. Some people would prefer to use chemicals as this cuts down on the time you spend working in your garden, but for me that is one of the many benefits. A lot of people point to all the studies coming out that state organically grown vegetables are no more nutritious than any other vegetables, which may be true, but there are so many other benefits usually left unmentioned. An organic garden poses no threat to your pets, assuming you aren’t growing anything they could ingest that would harm them. The weeds you eradicate (I prefer to pull them by hand) can be used for compost. Broad spectrum herbicides can stunt the growth of your plants and if not applied correctly, kill them. Pesticides kill ALL the bugs, not just the bad ones. You will have plenty of beneficial insects such as honey bees, in a garden grown organically. The greatest thrill for me is preparing a meal with the vegetables you’ve grown for your family, and the taste of fresh just can’t be beat! I’m sure if I gave it some thought I could think of many more reasons to go the organic route. Like I said, its a way of life!
